Question :
I’ve got a business website but it doesn’t seem to attract many visitors. How can I improve its performance? |
Answer: There are a few things to look at here:
1. Do you have your website on your business cards and ALL marketing material? If not, you should.
2. Is the content and look of your site interesting? Does it give people the ‘wow’ feeling so that they will pass it on to friends, family and acquaintances?
3. Do you have Search Engine Optimisation? SEO is key to being ‘found’ on the internet. Essentially your website is competing against all the other websites out there that are looking for the same customers as you. So, you need to get your site ‘higher up the ladder’. Some SEO tips include makings sure that your headings, content and page titles have relevant keywords in them; keeping your content fresh; and probably the most important is getting other well ranked sites to link to yours. There are a lot of tips and tricks to SEO that you can do yourself – I would suggest buying SEO for Dummies to give it a go. Be aware however that to do it really well takes an expert, so if you are in a competitive market, you may need to seek professional help.
4. Have you thought about paid advertising? Have a look into Google Adwords for example. Here you can select your keywords that will list you on the right hand side of the Google search page when people type your keywords into Google. Then if they click on your link, you pay a small amount for the privilege |

Question :
How do I decide if my business will really benefit from having a website? |
Answer: There are a few different views on this topic. Generally speaking, unless it is poorly done, a website will not hurt your business. Some people see websites a defensive marketing mechanism – that is, if my competitors have one, then I need one just to keep up. I tend to agree with this. If there are 3 plumbers out there, and two have websites and professional email addresses, and the third has a hotmail email and no website, then he won’t get my business.
Additionally, a website is a marketing tool. So, in thinking about having a website, think about how you want to market your business. Would having a brochure help your business? Would sending out flyers help your business? If the answer is yes, then probably a website will help your business.
The most important thing is to understand from the start what you want to get from your website. Then you make your website accountable for that measure the results and you will be able to see how effective the website is for you. |
